WOOD BUFFALO REGIONAL SCIENCE FAIR

2009 ARCHIVE

NEWS

THANKS FOR A GREAT YEAR!

The 2009 Science Fair season has drawn to a close. We’d like to thank our sponsors, judges, volunteers, and the numerous teachers and parents who made this event possible. We hope you will join us again next April for the 2010 Wood Buffalo Regional Science Fair. Information regarding the Fair and other WBYSF-hosted events will be available in September. Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

2009 CWSF

The University of Manitoba was host to 474 finalists from across Canada for the 2009 Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF). Three grade eight students from Wood Buffalo were accompanied to Winnipeg by WBYSF Treasurer, Vincella Thompson, and WBYSF President, Andrew Taylor. Maithili Udupa, from Westview School, presented her project “Which Bag Keeps an Apple Fresher?” while Jody MacIsaac and Tabaitha Brett, both from Father Beauregard School, exhibited their project “Cold Snaps.” The nine day event was an incredible experience and Maithili, Jody and Tabaitha did an excellent job representing our region. We are very proud of their accomplishments and hope to see them again at next year’s fair.

2009 FAIR AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS!

Nearly 150 students from 15 different schools participated in the 2009 Wood Buffalo Regional science Fair. This is twice the number of participants at last year’s fair! The projects were exceptional and we’d like to congratulate everyone that participated. Please check back soon for photos and videos from the 2009 WBRSF and news from the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In the meantime, you can view our 2009 award winners here.

OPENING TALK

We are very honoured to have world-renowned dinosaur palaeontologist Dr. Philip Currie and palaeobotanist Dr. Eva Koppelhus visit us from the University of Alberta to present our opening talks this year. These two short talks, co-sponsored by Keyano College as part of their “Global Address Lecture Series”, will begin at 7:30 pm on April 2nd, 2009 at the Oilsands Discovery Centre.  Dr. Koppelhus will present our first talk, "Cretaceous Park - Palynology and Paleobotany of the Upper Cretaceous of Alberta", followed by a discussion of "Recent Research on the Biology of Alberta Dinosaurs" by Dr. Currie. These talks will be followed by a reception. The talks and the reception are open to the general public and admission is free.  Tickets will be made available through the Keyano Box Office on a first come, first served basis beginning February 5th. A small number of tickets will be reserved for Junior and Senior WBRSF entrants and their familes. To acquire a reserved ticket, please complete this voucher and bring it to the Keyano Theatre Box Office before March 20th, 2009.

Dr. Koppelhus and Dr. Currie will also present an afternoon talk on April 2nd to our younger dinosaur enthusiasts. This talk will take place at 12:30pm in the Main Theatre of Keyano College.  Admission to this free talk is restricted to elementary school groups. Tickets will be offered first to grade four classes as seating is limited and this topic best compliments the grade four curriculum. Elementary teachers and school officials interested in including their students in the afternoon talk are asked to complete and submit this form.
